The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Highlights Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job
The ongoing government stoppage, now among the lengthiest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the shutdown.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes BLS data to determine labor market conditions, such as the count of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to 4.3% – the highest since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Continued Decline
Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand jobs in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the highest since January. In April, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
