Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System in 2025.

The Championships court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.

Athletes are granted the ability to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the system currently in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific situations, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

An illustrative example took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
